Monica Rodriguez | Education Minister

Education is defined in countless ways, but I read one meaning that resonated with me and it is that “education is an enlightening experience.” Those five succinct words hold power. The ministry bestowed on me as Education Minister is one I serve with great pride as a former teacher, principal, and educational mentor of 28 years. When asked about education, there is a spark that is ignited and I feel euphoric. Oftentimes people will ask me whether I enjoyed being an educator and I have to pace myself because the countless stories come gushing forth and I have to temper the enthusiasm to share that it is the most rewarding of all careers, in my opinion. One particular quote from a favorite philosopher says it all for me, "Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work." - Aristotle.

Growing up in El Paso’s lower valley part of town was incredible as a child. There were cotton fields to run across, flooded school yards to splish splash, and dirt roads to ride bikes. My parents did everything possible to give their children the best chance at life and that meant learning English, doing well in school, and working hard to earn a living. My brother and I succeeded in all of these three areas hoping to make them proud. Later, as a young adult I added college as a next goal along with pursuing an advanced degree in Educational Leadership to make a difference in young children’s lives. Teaching and advocating for special needs children became a mission throughout my career which culminated in an elementary principalship at a large bilingual school with high needs.

All could not have been possible without the loving support of my family and friends. Raymundo Rodriguez, a Rey Feo Consejo member and successful businessman, has been at my side for over 30 years without wavering. We had two beautiful girls, Sofia and Amalisa, who have grown into fabulous young women that make me gush with motherly pride. A few years back we were blessed with one grandchild, Maverick, who by the grace of God entered our lives to remind us of all that is good in life each day.

Our family is centered around building strong familial bonds, promoting their education, and providing them opportunities to build their futures. We firmly believe that children are our future—join me, my family, our court of ministers and El Rey Feo, Dr. Damaso Oliva, Jr. in our quest to spread the enlightening experience of education by supporting the El Rey Feo Educational Foundation. -Viva Oliva
